In zijn artikel ‘L’Effet de Réel’ uit 1968 legde de Franse literatuurwetenschapper Roland Barthes uit hoe je verhaalelementen die ogenschijnlijk betekenisloos zijn als realiteitseffect kun zien. Bij deze theorie zijn ook wat kanttekeningen te plaatsen.
